In surfing, when the wave is too big or moving too quickly for the surfer to catch, a technique called a tow in can be used. The technique consists of a surfer being "towed in" to a breaking wave by someone driving a wave runner or helicopter attached to a cable. This technique allows the surfer to catch the wave at exactly the right position. Surfing via the tow in method first gained popularity in the mid-1990's and was first tried by Laird Hamilton, Thomas Bernard, and others. The helicopter method has sever advantages over the wave runner method because the pilot is able to precisely spot the waves and the ideal drop off position. Also, it moves a lot faster than a wave runner does and isn't affected by the surf conditions.
